Elections in Argentina: doubt in the dispute between Massa and Milei and where Bullrich’s 6 million votes will go

The fate of Patricia Bullrich’s 6.2 million votes — placed third in the first round of Argentina’s presidential election — will be decisive in the dispute between government leader Sergio Massa and ultra-liberal Javier Milei on November 19.

During the speech she gave after her defeat, the moral conservative did not congratulate her opponents and harshly criticized the current government. This Monday (23), she also did not declare support for either of them.

Thus, despite the defeat, Bullrich now becomes the protagonist of the Argentine election. And both Massa and Milei are already trying to capture the electorate with new speeches and political alliances.

For an analyst heard by the CNN the speech of unity, to attract votes from other voters, may seem easier for Sergio Massa:

“Massa has been very firmly defending the idea of a government of national unity for some time. In other words, it is very easy for Massa to say to everyone: ‘Come with me, and if there are good libertarians and liberals, come with me too”, commented the expert.

“In the case of Milei, the perspective seems a little more complicated, because he systematically insulted all possible opponents”, he added.

Surprises in the election

Last Sunday’s election (22) was a bit surprising with the results, mainly due to the reaction of Peronist Sergio Massa.

Two months ago, in the primaries, the current Minister of Economy came in third place. From 27% of the vote in August, he has jumped to almost 37% now.

Meanwhile, the favorite until then, Javier Milei, with controversial and radical speeches, was practically stagnant. In both the primaries and the first round he got around 30%.

Patrícia Bullrich, from the center-right coalition, had a worse performance than in the primaries. In August, she received 28% of the votes. Yesterday, the former minister in Mauricio Macri’s government received 23%.
