Elections in Costa Rica: Clear lead of H. Figueras in view of the second round

LAST UPDATE: 12.30

Former President (1994-1998) Jose Maria Figueres has a clear lead in the presidential election held yesterday, Sunday, in Costa Rica, according to data released by the election authority after counting at least 75% of the vote, followed by the former Minister of Finance Rodrigo Chavez.

However, he would need at least 40% of the vote to avoid a run-off in April. Figueres, the candidate of the National Liberation Party (PLN, center-left), has so far secured 27.3% of the vote, while Chavez, of the center-right PSD party, has around 16.6%.

Fabricio Alvarado, an evangelical preacher, candidate of the New Democracy Party, is in third place with about 15.1%.

At least 20 were the candidates for the successor of the Social Democrat Carlos Alvarado, who remained in office for almost four years.

As Costa Rica’s constitution barred the president from running for a second term, Carlos Alvarado could not run. Velmer Ramos, a former economy minister, is the candidate of the Alvarado Citizens’ Action Party (PAC) party, which has been in power for eight years, securing less than 1%.

In yesterday’s elections, the 57 seats of the parliament were also judged. The PLN also led in this election, with projections showing that it would secure just under 20 seats, while the PAC, nine.

A popular tourist destination, Costa Rica, with a population of about five million, is known for its biodiversity and nature conservation efforts.
