Elections in Germany – Grigoris Angelidis: The Greek of the Bundestag claims his re-election

It was last March, when the Grigoris Angelidis, celebrated with all the Greeks 200 years since the beginning of the Greek Revolution, shouting from the Bundestag “Happy Birthday Greece, Long Live the Nation!”

Grigoris Angelidis, the the only federal MP of Greek origin today at Germany, bears his Greek identity with pride and, as he says in APE-MPE, he considers it his moral obligation to defend the interests of both his homelands.

Mr. Angelidis claims his re-election the day after Liberal Party in Hanover and says ready for the next day. He is convinced that after the departure of Angela Merkel, the balances in both Germany and Europe will change a lot. “This election is one of the most important in recent years, as Germany is very influential at European level and its choices do not go unnoticed by other countries. “Germany urgently needs a new dynamic and bold government that will bring new air to political events.” She even criticizes the outgoing Chancellor that all these years her attitude was “expected and monotonous”. “Under no circumstances should the new government be content in that direction pointed out Mrs Merkel“, He emphasizes.

As for tomorrow’s challenges, the FDP Member considers that Germany and Europe will be called upon to address collective, key issues, such as climate change, the immigrant, the security of European borders, as well as creating a stable, strong and timeless economy. He expects that because of the occupation of Afghanistan by them Taliban, Europe will face new ones immigration wave. “For the people of Afghanistan whose lives are threatened, but also for the people of Europe who will receive many people, a commonly accepted humanitarian solution must be found,” he said. Regarding the climate, he notes that efforts should be made, “in order to leave our grandchildren and great-grandchildren a viable planet” and recalls that the summer floods in western Germany, with dozens dead, but also fires of recent months in Greece, are largely due to rising temperatures.

Child of immigrants from Kilkis, The 56-year-old Grigoris Angelidis, despite all the difficulties, insists that its Greek roots are only an asset. “German politicians with Greek roots are treated like all other MPs, there is no discrimination,” he assures. On the contrary, he continues, “the parties ask for our advice and contribution to Greek issues, as well as to Greek-German relations, because we know from the inside both cultures and we better understand the needs of the Greek people.”

Fortunately, as he says, Greek-German relations are now occupied by mutual trust and respect – with few exceptions – and are no longer tense, as they were four years ago. At the time, he says, malicious articles and sharp statements from both sides did not help to improve the situation. Now, however, there is still much room for improvement.

But what role could he play between the two peoples? “I see myself as a bridge between the two countries, as a bridge that seeks the prosperity of both countries, without exception. I am of the opinion that people who have lived in both countries and who understand the way of thinking of the citizens of both countries are the most suitable people to boost bilateral relations. I feel my moral obligation to defend the interests of both my homelands “.
