Elections in Iceland: The ruling coalition retains its majority

Close to maintaining the majority is the right-left alliance which is a government in Iceland.

This emerges from the provisional results of the parliamentary elections, with right-wing parties gaining ground and Prime Minister Catherine Jacobsdottir’s Green Left movement recording losses.

The governing alliance 38 of the 63 seats in the Icelandic parliament have been credited so far, with more than a third of the votes counted, however it is not certain that the three factions will continue to co-rule.

The big winner of the night was the Progress Party (center-right), which is going to seize the position of the second largest political force in Iceland from the Left-Green movement of Mrs. Jacobsdottir, behind the Independence Party (right) of the former Prime Minister..

According to statistical projections, this the latter is going to get 24.3% of the vote and 16 seats (equal to the ones it had) out of the 63 of the parliament, while the party of Sigurdur Ingi Johansson will win 16.5% of the votes and 13 seats (+ 5 compared to 2017).

The Left-Green party falls to 14.7% in all 9 seats (-2).

Although the future of the alliance remains uncertain, the three party leaders had agreed to hold talks if they retained the majority of seats in parliament, which they threatened to lose in opinion polls.
