To withdraw his candidacy 48 hours before the polls open, decided Mohsen Mehralizadeh, one of the two reformist candidates in the presidential election in Iran.
The information was initially transmitted by the official agency Irna, without mentioning its source, before it was confirmed by Isna’s rival, who referred to the representative of the Mehralizadeh election team.
He did not elaborate on Mehralizadeh’s decision to leave the race, saying only that an official announcement would be made “in a few hours”, according to Isna and the Athens News Agency.
Of the seven presidential candidates (five ultra-conservatives and two reformists), Mehralizadeh was the only one with no more than 1% of the vote, according to the Ispa polling institute.
The ultra-conservative Ebrahim Raisi, head of the Judiciary, is considered the election favorite. Four years ago, when he was running again, Raisi had 38% of the vote.
