The Democratic Alliance (AD) center-right party won the early parliamentary elections of Portugal on Sunday (18), but again it did not receive the necessary majority in Parliament that would end a long period of instability, meanwhile the Ultra right party won a record installment of the votes.
The current interim prime minister, Luís Montenegro, said the outcome of the election was a vote of confidence in his party.
However, the accounting of foreign votes is still lacking, with them the arrival can replace the center-left socialists as the main opposition party, ending almost 40 years of dominance of the two main subtitles in the country.
Continuous political instability can delay structural reforms and large projects in Portugal, including lithium mining in the North, and potentially compromise the efficient application of European Union funds and the privatization of the TAP airline, a long time delayed.
This election, the third in two years, was summoned after the current Prime Minister Montenegro lost the vote of confidence in March, held a year after the mandate of the minority government of the Democratic Alliance.
At the time, the opposition questioned his integrity regarding negotiations with his family’s consulting firm. The premie has denied any irregularity.
Electoral data showed that AD obtained gains, winning 89 seats in the 230 seat parliament, nine more than in the previous election.
Montenegro, who ruled out any agreement with the arrival, said he waited for a minority government.
“The Portuguese no longer want early elections, they want a four -year legislature,” he said as his supporters shouted “let Luis work,” his campaign slogan.
The arrival won 8 seats, totaling 58, obtaining a record of 22.6% of the votes, while voters seemed to punish the socialists for their role in the overthrow of the government of Montenegro.
They fell from 78 to 58 seats, leading socialist leader Pedro Nuno Santos to announce his resignation.
The arrival leader André Ventura, hospitalized during the campaign after passing out on stage with an esophageal spasm, stated that his party “swept the left block of the map with style.”
“There are times in the life when God says: Stop a little,” he told a multitude of euphoric supporters. “This time, I won’t hear. I won’t stop until I become Prime Minister of Portugal.”
