For years, the media have been crediting Apple with working on its own electric car. Now she, according to internal sources cited by the portal GizmoChina, is negotiating with suppliers of batteries for her first electric car.
According to insiders, Apple is considering two Chinese companies – CATL and BYD – as suppliers of batteries for its electric car. Allegedly, negotiations between these three companies have already begun, but no specific agreements have yet been reached. It is noted that most likely Apple will install lithium-iron-phosphate batteries in its electric car, which are cheaper than analogues due to their composition.
Apple hopes to meet the deadline and unveil its first electric car on schedule, sources said. The company already has its own developments, including in the field of batteries. Therefore, it is possible that Apple’s potential partnership with CATL or BYD means that these companies will engage in contract manufacturing of batteries developed by Apple, by analogy with A- and M-series processors, which are contracted by chipmaker TSMC.
It is worth noting that CATL is the world leader in car batteries and the main battery supplier for most electric vehicle manufacturers, including the giant Tesla. BYD is the fourth largest manufacturer of vehicle batteries.
