Electric tram derails and leaves four injured in Norway

A tram hit a store in the center of Oslo this Tuesday (29). The collision injured the driver and at least three other people, Norwegian police said.

Emergency services treated the injured at the scene, and none of them are believed to have suffered serious injuries, according to a police statement. Authorities also added that at the time of the collision there were around 20 passengers on board.

Footage at the scene showed the blue tram belonging to Oslo transport company Sporveien which left the tracks and collided with a computer store on the ground floor of a four-story building in the center of the Norwegian capital.

The vehicle derailed as it was turning left onto Storgata, one of the main streets in central Oslo, said Anders Roenning, the police officer in charge of operations at the scene.

“Instead, the train went straight to the store,” he told Reuters.

“According to the information we now have, three people on board the tram were injured, as was one person outside the tram, and one or two people went to the emergency room on their own, where they were. We are not in contact with them right now, but we are working to get in touch with them,” the official said.

Demolition worker Thomas Larsen, 41, said he was driving down the street on an electric scooter towards the tram when it derailed in front of him.

“I hit the brakes. Three seconds later, I would have been under the tram,” he told Reuters. “It’s scary that this could happen in the middle of the city.”

It was still too early to say what had caused the collision, said a spokesman for tram operator Sporveien. “We will have to conduct on-site investigations by our experts,” the official added.

The accident prompted a massive response from rescue services, isolating the area. The building has been closed and will be checked for any structural damage, police said.
