Electricity crisis worsens in Ecuador and government plans days of blackouts in the country

The Ecuadorian government has decided to increase power cuts across the country for the next week due to the worst drought in 61 years in the South American country, according to information from the Presidency in a statement on Monday (16).

National blackouts are scheduled for September 23, 24, 25 and 26, from 10 pm until 6 am the following day, local time, with the aim of “responsibly managing the control of the electrical system”.

In addition, the government has determined that public sector workers must carry out their duties remotely on September 19, 20, 26 and 27.

“The established cutting schedule was chosen with the aim of generating the least possible impact on production activities and the development of the working day,” he added.

In addition to these new decisions, there is also the forecast of a national blackout for this Wednesday (18), from 10 pm until 6 am on Thursday (19), local time, to carry out “preventive maintenance” on the country’s transmission system and energy distribution networks.

The measure will be accompanied by a nationwide curfew to ensure the safety of citizens during the massive power outage, the Interior Ministry said.

Ecuador is experiencing an electricity crisis, a consequence of the reduction in the operation of hydroelectric plants, the drought in the country, the reduction in the flow of the rivers that feed the hydroelectric plants, reports of alleged sabotage, damage to some equipment and dependence on energy purchases from Colombia.

The government reported that it has implemented some actions to control the crisis, such as the approval of regulations for the import of natural gas, the arrival of a generator ship, the incorporation of abandoned energy infrastructures, among others.
