Electronic passports in Russia: they will start issuing in 2021 at the age of 14, the procedure is the same as for paper passports

The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs has shared details about the issuance of new internal passports, which will look like a plastic card with an embedded chip (PEN). From December 1, 2021, residents of the capital who have reached the age of 14 will begin to receive such documents, and from July 1, 2023, the opportunity to issue a new passport will be available in all other regions of the country.

“From a legal point of view, PEN will be equal in status to valid paper passports, have increased security, including cryptographic ones,” the department said.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs assured that all Russians, without exception, will be able to obtain a new identity card. At the same time, there will be no priorities regarding issuance. Initially, it is planned to issue 100 thousand plastic passports. To receive a document, you need to take a photo and scan two fingerprints. Otherwise, the procedure will not differ from obtaining a paper passport. In addition to these data, other necessary personal data of the owner, as well as his electronic signature, if desired, will be recorded on the chip.

The advantage of an e-passport is that it allows you to use government and commercial services. In addition, such a document can be quickly blocked if it is lost. The ministry hopes that the Russians will be able to enter the countries they are allowed to enter with an internal passport using a plastic document.
