In January 2023, Russia intends to start issuing electronic passports. At the moment, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media, as well as other state services are working out the requirements for the document processing procedure. Valentina Kazakova, head of the Main Directorate for Migration Issues of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, spoke about this on the air of the Militseyskaya Volna radio.
The issuance of electronic passports will be carried out on a voluntary basis to citizens of the Russian Federation from the age of 14. Kazakova predicts that at least 100,000 new passports will be issued at the initial stage. There is no priority in obtaining the document yet.
The head of the Main Directorate for Migration Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs also noted that many citizens are interested in e-passports and apply to the department with a request to inform about the timing of the start of issuing the document. Such a passport has a built-in data carrier, and from a legal point of view, it is equivalent to a valid paper passport.
Initially, it was planned to issue electronic passports from December 1 of this year, but disagreements arose in the Ministry of Digital Affairs during the development of the corresponding decree. Now all the issues have been settled, and the document will soon be submitted for consideration to the presidential administration.
