On August 10, elementary released a new version of its elementary OS Linux distribution – 6.0, codenamed Odin. The release was delayed, usually major updates are released in the year the LTS version of Ubuntu is released, that is, every even year.
elementary OS is a GNU / Linux distribution based on Ubuntu and using its own Pantheon environment. Also, developers are developing their own AppCenter application store and SDK for their creation.
Cassidy James Blaede, co-founder of elementary, calls OS 6 the biggest platform update to date.
Loading screen

The new boot screen now displays the computer manufacturer’s logo, if present in UEFI, similar to how it is done in Windows, Ubuntu and Fedora.
Installer

To install the system, a new installer is now used, developed in conjunction with System76, the computer manufacturer and developer of the Pop! _OS distribution kit. The elementary team was responsible for the GUI, System76 for the backend. Previous versions used the Ubuntu installer, Ubiquity.

Appearance

The Open Sans font that was used on the system since version 0.2 of Luna (and is still used on the Threshbox) has been replaced with Inter.
The theme code was rewritten into the SCSS language, and along with this, changes were made to the design: they increased the radius of the corners and made the background of the elements lighter for better contrast.
Dark theme

In elementary OS 6, it became possible to set the dark style of the interface.
The dark theme can be enabled in the “System Settings”, in the “Desktop” section, in the “View” tab. It is possible to set up automatic theme change at the appointed time or at sunset / sunrise.
In previous versions of elementary OS, it was possible to force-activate the dark theme using third-party utilities, but not all applications supported it or were adapted to it in terms of design. It appeared officially in OS 6 and is supported by the standard elementary applications.

The dark theme is applied to websites as well if it is implemented in CSS using the prefers-color-scheme media query.

Personalization
In the same “View” tab, the ability to change the color used in elements such as priority buttons, toggle switches, checkboxes, and so on has been added. In Russian localization, it is referred to as the “primary color”, although in the original English version and the design industry in general, it is referred to as “accent color” or “accent color”.
There are 10 colors to choose from, and an automatic change is also available in accordance with the current background.
Flatpak
elementary OS began the transition to the Flatpak package format in 2019 when support was added in version 5.1 of Hera. After installing the application via .flatpakref (a file with a link to the application in the repository), the applications available for downloading from this repository were displayed in the AppCenter.
In elementary OS 6, some system applications are now delivered as Flatpak packages.

The advantages of Flatpak are application isolation and permission system. In the “Applications” section of the settings, a new “Access rights” tab has appeared, in which you can allow or restrict Flatpak applications access to devices, network, system, and so on.
Applications
“Tasks”

A new application “Tasks” has been added to the system for compiling task lists. Like the other apps in this distribution, it is built in the elementary spirit: simple, minimalistic, no customization.

Lists can be color-coded, tasks can be assigned location and date. There is synchronization from online services via CalDav.
“Files”

In previous versions of elementary OS, both folders and files were opened with one click. In OS 6, one click is still enough to open a folder, and now you need to double-click on a file to open it. Cassidy James Blade states that this change balances the efficiency of one-click navigation like the rest of the OS and the web, while addressing the issue of accidentally opening multiple copies of a file or a large file in an application that loads slowly.
“Mail”
Previously, there was an email client based on Geary. Now this is a new application written from scratch. Like Geary, it also uses the Evolution Data Server.

“The calendar”

“Calendar” has learned to synchronize events from online services via the CalDav protocol.
“Camera”

Now you can switch between different cameras, enable or disable mirroring, control brightness and contrast. After the end of the recording, the application will show a notification with a button to watch the video.
“Screenshot”

Now the resulting snapshot can be dragged from the preview into another application (for example, a graphics editor or messenger) without copying it to the clipboard or saving it.
“Terminal”

You can reload a tab via the context menu or the Shift + Ctrl + R key combination. Also, Ctrl + Tab hotkeys are added to switch between tabs and Ctrl + Alt + ← / → to move them.
Touchpad gestures
Increased interaction of the touchpad with the system. For example, in System Settings, you can return to the previous screen by sliding horizontally across the touchpad with two fingers. This feature was implemented using Handy, a library from Purism for creating mobile interfaces.
With the same gesture, you can delete the notification.

Animation is available when clicked. File size: 2.2 MB.
Three-finger gestures were implemented with the help of Touchegg. By default, swiping up the touchpad with three fingers will bring up a multitasking view (similar to Mission Control from macOS), left or right – will switch between spaces.
Section “System”

The “About System” section of the parameters has also changed, now it is called simply “System” and is responsible not only for displaying information about the operating system and technical characteristics: in the “Firmware” tab, you can update the firmware of computer components.

How to download?

elementary OS is distributed on a pay-what-you-can basis. The developers offer users to choose the cost of downloading the image themselves. The distribution kit can be downloaded for free, for this you need to select “Other amount”, type $ 0 in the field and click “Download elementary OS”.
