Elephant completes 60 years and wins party at BioParque in Rio de Janeiro

One of the oldest residents of the BioParque in Rio de Janeiro has plenty of reasons to celebrate.

The Koala elephant reaches the age of 60, when the life expectancy of the species in the wild is a decade less. To mark the date, on “World Elephant Day”, the zoo’s grandma won a party this Saturday (12).

The celebration began at 10 am, with an exhibition with curiosities about the species. From 12h onwards, visitors will be able to follow a check-up, carried out daily by the technical team, to monitor the Koala’s health conditions. Soon after, the birthday girl won a cake in her favorite flavor: fruits with hay.

The elephant, who has 3.5 tons of charisma spread over 2.4 meters in height and 5.5 meters in length from trunk to tail, is also passionate about watermelon and had the fruit as one of her gifts, in addition to balls of grass with flowers, another delicacy appreciated by the young lady.

One of the public’s favorite animals, the Koala elephant arrived at the zoo in 1990, when it was still the former RioZoo, after being rescued from the Moscow Circus.

In 2021, with the opening of BioParque do Rio, the animal gained a new space of about 8,000 square meters, 10 times larger than where it previously lived. In it, the public can see your swim up close through a large acrylic panel.

The celebration also serves as an awareness of the need for conservation. Asian elephants (Elephas maximus), according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) list of endangered species, are classified as endangered, as there has been a major decline in their natural habitat for account of the impact of human activities.
