Elephant kills Colombian researcher in Uganda

An elephant killed a Colombian researcher who was studying chimpanzees in Kibali National Park in western Uganda, officials said.

Sebastián Ramírez Amaya, who was studying at Arizona State University (ASU), in the United States, was trampled to death last Sunday (10) while conducting research in the forest with an assistant.

“They came across a lone elephant that attacked them, forcing the pair to run in different directions,” the Uganda Wildlife Agency said in a statement late Monday.

“The elephant followed Sebastián and trampled him, leading to his death,” he added.

Amaya was doing a doctorate on the social lives of male and female chimps, according to her profile on the ASU website.

His death comes three months after a Saudi tourist was killed by an elephant in another national park in Uganda.
