A female elephant seal was rescued last Wednesday afternoon (20), after remaining stranded for around seven days. The action was carried out by a team from the Gremar Institute, in Praia das Astúrias, in Guarujá, on the coast of São Paulo.
Due to the high flow of bathers in the area, one day after running aground, the animal was transferred to a more reserved space in the region, at Praia do Monduba, also in Guarujá (SP).
According to the Institute, the elephant was underweight and, in addition to signs of exhaustion, also showed changes in initial blood tests. In this way, the animal was kept in a temporary space built by the Gremar team on the beach, so that it could receive care.
There, the elephant had access to shade and water, and had regular monitoring, hydration and medication during the period in which it did not return to the sea, so that teams could frequently assess its health status.
After days of treatment, the animal underwent new hematological tests and, in addition to demonstrating that it was more reactive to treatments, the results showed significant improvements, which helped the team consider it ready to return to its habitat.
This way, the animal managed to return to the sea, last Wednesday (20). “The enclosure was opened so that the elephant seal could return to the sea, at its own pace, when it was comfortable – which was around 1 pm”, highlighted the Gremar Institute.
