Eletronuclear signs a contract for the resumption of Angra 3 works

After receiving approval from the Eletrobras Board of Directors for the resumption of Angra 3 works, the subsidiary Eletronuclear signed the contract with the consortium led by the contractor Ferreira Guedes, also composed of Matricial and ADtranz, for the project to move forward.

The consortium won the bidding for the Acceleration Plan for the Plant’s Critical Path, which will demand around R$300 million and will involve the construction of the reactor building and other safety buildings.

The signing of the contract was announced by Eletronuclear on Wednesday night (3).

Eletrobras issued a notice to the market:

“Among the main measures included in the Critical Path Acceleration Plan is the completion of the concrete superstructure of the Angra 3 reactor building. In addition, an important part of the electromechanical assembly will be carried out, which includes the closing of the steel ball containment and installation of the used fuel pool, the polar bridge and the semi-port crane”, says an excerpt from the document.

In another, the state-owned company says it will carry out yet another tender to hire the company or consortium that will complete the civil works and electromechanical assembly of the plant.

The completion of the works, which began in 1984 and stopped six years ago, is scheduled for 2026, according to statements by Bento Albuquerque, Minister of Mines and Energy.

In early February, the CNN showed that Eletronuclear projects that the completion of the works on the plant will consume R$ 17 billion – a value that can be updated by the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), responsible for preparing the public notice for the new bid.

The value informed by the subsidiary at the time is greater than the budgets of 24 Brazilian capitals approved for 2022, behind only São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

The amount also exceeds the amounts allocated by 10 states for the same purpose, in the same period.

According to the state-owned company, the Angra 3 works are 65% complete and, so far, have already demanded investments of R$ 7.8 billion. A date for the resumption of works has not yet been announced.

Currently, Brazil has two nuclear power plants in operation, both in Angra dos Reis, on the Costa Verde, in Rio de Janeiro. Angra 1 and Angra 2 are responsible for generating 1.1% of the energy in the Brazilian Interconnected System (SIN).
