Eleven people were killed and 36 others injured when a grain dryer collapsed on Friday in Gasambo district, on the outskirts of the capital, Kigali. Rwanda.
“The accident occurred around 08:30 (local time). The dryer collapsed due to the heavy weight of the maize cobs”a local official told reporters, clarifying that many people overseeing the processing of their grain were overwhelmed.
The injured were taken to a hospital in the Masaka district.
The dryer belongs to a cooperative of about 76 farmers.
Prime Minister Edward Ngirede expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and pledged that the authorities will carry out checks on the safety of the infrastructure in order to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
