Eleven people died in the fire that broke out in a holiday home for people with disabilities in France

Eleven people died from fire that destroyed a holiday home housing for people with disabilities in the east France early this morning, officials said. THE fire broke out before 06:30 (07:30 Greek time) as holidaymakers with learning disabilities and their carers they slept in the two-story building in the town of Vincennes, about 70 kilometers south of Strasbourg.

“I can confirm that there are 11 victims,” deputy public prosecutor Natalie Kielwasser told reporters as Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne and other officials visited the scene of the fire.

A firefighter told Bourne, who characterized the fire “shocking tragedy”, that eight bodies have been located and three more are believed to have been located under the falls.
Local media reported that the dead were ten people with disabilities and a carer.

The holiday home had been rented for the summer by two charities looking after people with learning disabilities, with each organization occupying one floor of the home. Twenty-eight people lived there, 17 of whom managed to escape the fire.

“Some who were sleeping on the first floor managed to escape, but most of those who got out were on the ground floor,” deputy fire chief Philippe Ouillet, who led the rescue operations, told reporters earlier in the day.

The fire consumed about two-thirds of the building.

An investigation is underway, according to the Athens News Agency, to determine the cause of the fire. Kielwasser told reporters that it was a small fire that burned for a while before becoming larger and extending throughout the building. The missing people were probably between 25 and 50 years old, Vice Mayor of Vincennes told BFM television.
