ELGO-DIMITRA: And new revocation of PDO certification by an olive oil standardization company

During the on-site inspection carried out by a unit of ELGO-DIMITRA, at the premises of the company “ZACHARAKIS K. KE SIA OE.” in the prefecture of Rethymno, Crete, with activity in the standardization of olive oil, it was found that the company in question, in the year 2020, distributed 39,100 liters of olive oil, with the indication “SITIA LASSITHIOU CRETE PDO”, and in the year 2021 2,416 liters of olive oil , with the indication “NORTH MYLOPOTAMOS OF RETHYMNO CRETE PDO”, which abusively bore both the above indications, as well as the corresponding registration specifications of the said products, in violation of the applicable national and EU legislation.

There was also a complete lack of documentation for purchases of raw materials, as well as the absence of records of the above quantities in the respective input-output files.

In addition, during the audit it was found that the company has deficiencies in the correct indication of the officially registered indications in the distribution documents, as well as the labeling of the moving products.

Following the above, ELGO – DIMITRA decided:

– the revocation of the certification of the company “ZACHARAKIS K. AND CO OE.” in the prefecture of Rethymno, Crete, regarding the packaging, for the purpose of marketing, of olive oil with the indication “SITIA LASSITHIOU KRITIS PDO.” and olive oil with the indication “NORTH MYLOPOTAMOS RETHYMNON CRETE PDO.”

– the referral of the company to the Primary Committee for the Examination of Irregularities & Infringements of PDO / PGE products. of the Υ.Π.Α.Α.Τ. for the imposition of sanctions, in accordance with applicable law

Actions of ELGO DIMITRA will follow, in cooperation with co-competent services, in accordance with the provisions of the current legislation.
