Her exam began this morning at 9. Eliana D’Alvia, who attended a technical institute in Perugia and is Ris (institute representative of the portal SchoolZoo), was among the very first Italian students to have sustained the Maturity. This year they are over 540 thousand the boys involved (96.2% of the students were admitted to the test): they must support an interview of about an hour in front of an external President and six internal commissioners.
“It went well,” he tells us.
“We were told it was going to be a multidisciplinary interview, but I didn’t think it was so much: I went from history to French to law so naturally that I felt like I was talking about the same subject.”
How did it go?
«The interview lasted more than an hour: the teachers asked me a lot of questions. The exam began with the presentation of a paper that I had prepared at home, but which I had to present in a different key. I talked about it for about 20 minutes: it was a business plan for the food sector ».
Then?
«For the second part of the interview I had to comment on Salvatore Quasimodo’s poem“ Alle fronde dei salici ”and frame it in the literary, historical and cultural context, and I answered questions about other authors: Pascoli, Marinetti and Pirandello. Finally I was shown a photo from which to start to illustrate the operation of a company in German, since I chose the address with three foreign languages. I looked for links with other subjects and talked about the Erasmus project in Northern Ireland in which I participated ».
Would you have preferred the writings too?
“Many of my schoolmates prefer oral, but I would have preferred at least one written in Italian, also to test the competence in writing.”
Did you prepare yourself or with your mates?
“We had a mega refresher in the open air with the Italian teacher. Otherwise I have always studied alone, also because I’m used to it. But yesterday morning I found a video call with some companions very useful: in three hours we reviewed all the subjects, albeit remotely. It was useful to make exam simulations ».
Was it a tough year?
«Yes, especially from the point of view of sociality. But belonging to an online community of peers gave me stimuli and didn’t make me feel alone and alienated ».
Were the commissioners lenient or more demanding than you expected?
«Since they are internal, one might think that having an interview with them is easier, however, precisely for this reason, they also have many expectations. But it is true that they know us and try to enhance our attitudes ».
To those who say it was a series b exam, what would you answer?
«I hope with all my heart I hope that this exam does not identify us as the generation that has made an easy Maturity. Maybe it won’t be comparable to a traditional exam, but the year we lived wasn’t that too ».
