Eliminating racial discrimination should be the goal of every society, says expert

This March 21 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, created by the United Nations.

A CNN Radio on CNN No Plural, the founder and director of the Instituto Identidades do Brasil Luana Génot argued that the date “needs to be a milestone in Brazil.”

In her assessment, one of the country’s biggest challenges in ending racial discrimination is “removing the burden that it needs to be fought only by the black and indigenous population.”

According to the writer and businesswoman, this needs to “be a matter for society as a whole, with a purposeful agenda beyond criminal cases.”

She believes that the agenda must be part of schools: “More than saying no to racism, we need to say yes to racial equality.”

The expert reinforces that Brazil lacks a racial literacy initiative, from early childhood, in addition to saying yes to laws for “this racial education to be perennial.”

Luana lists the Statute of Racial Equality, the equation of racial injury with racism and quotas in the Functionalism Law as some of the advances achieved.

Despite this, she sees a long way to go: “We need to work on anti-racist education such as the ‘Use Condoms’ or ‘Vaccine your Child’ campaigns”.
