Elizabeth Hurley says working with Matthew Perry was a ‘nightmare’

Elizabeth Hurley revealed that working with Matthew Perry in the midst of his battle with drug and alcohol addiction in the early 1980s was no cakewalk for everyone involved.

The actress was asked to star opposite Perry in the 2002 romantic comedy All Sarah’s fault during an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment last Wednesday, during which he recounted that, despite having “very beautiful memories” of Perry, “to be honest, working with him at that time was a nightmare and, as is now known, our film was blocked because of his addiction. She added, “We were in a force majeure situation and had to stay at home twiddling our thumbs for some time.”

In her new memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Perry says he starred in that film and how his addiction and recovery journey forced the production to stop filming. Also in the book, the star of Friends remember how both Hurley and the director Reginald Hudlin were understandably “angry” about the situation that had arisen. Hurley said that, even if “it was a bit tough”, when Perry returned to the set after two months of rehabilitation, “it was fabulous”, even if he had to “review everything we shot without him” . In his memoir, Perry also explains that he had to re-record all the dialogue, because in scenes already filmed he often slurred. He wrote: «Of course the film did badly all the same. I was paid $3.5 million to do it and was sued for the disruption, even though it was a health issue. At the brokerage table, I was faced with a group of insurers, and I got away with writing a check for $650,000.”

Hurley added: “It was tough, obviously he was having a tough time, but he was still very charming and a lovely person to work with. You could see, however, that she was suffering ». She, the actress, declared that she had not “read the whole book yet”, but only a few excerpts and that she found it “rather interesting”. She specified: «He is a very funny writer, just as he is a very funny man. He’s an incredibly gifted comedian … his way of using words is fantastic ».

Last month, in an interview with People, Perry revealed that with this book he wanted to “share the moment when I was certain I would not repeat it. To write I had to wait until I was sober enough and away from alcoholism and addiction. Most importantly, I was pretty sure it could help other people.”
