There is a first time for everything, even at 95. And next Wednesday, June 2, Elizabeth II will be found for the first time alone, without her Philip, nell’anniversary of his coronation. Sixty-eight years of reign, a record for the British monarchy, that the queen will live undertone in one of the saddest periods of her life.
The death of her consort, who passed away on April 9 in Windsor Castle, left the sovereign alone in a particularly difficult time, punctuated by the continuos attacks of Harry e Meghan Markle towards the royal family. Elizabeth finds herself bearing the weight without Philip at her side (he was “simply my strength”, as she wrote after her husband’s death). Ed “She’s upset”. But it must go on. In a speech made on the occasion of her twenty-first birthday, the queen promised her subjects that she would reign for life: “My whole life, be it short or long, will be in the service of you and of our country“. Now that Filippo is dead he hasn’t changed his mind. He will not step aside in favor of his son Carlo, who at 72 is still waiting for his moment.
Elizabeth instead he was only 27 years old when, on 2 June 1953, he crossed the threshold of Westminster Abbey to be crowned queen of the United Kingdom and head of the Commonwealth. In managing the endless preparations for that event, 16 months after the death of her father King George VI, the then princess could count on the support of Philip, her husband for six years. It was the Duke of Edinburgh who wanted the ceremony to be recorded and broadcast live on television, the first time ever for a coronation. Filippo, who has always been known for his humor (as well as for the epics gaffe) he managed to make the queen laugh even on that very solemn day. Looking at the crown, he whispered to her: “But where did you get that hat?”.
Who knows if on Wednesday, when the whole Kingdom pays homage to her for her 68 years of reign, Elizabeth II will go back to that funny episode. Certainly will not be able to do without think, with nostalgia, of all the anniversaries of her reign celebrated with her husband at her side.
Since Filippo left her, later seventy-three years of marriage, Elizabeth is appeared in public on only three occasions. Al husband’s funeral, of which the moving image of the queen sitting alone in the chapel of San Giorgio remains; last 11 May for the State Opening of Parliament, or the speech of the sovereign for the reopening of the activities of the Parliament; is on 22 May in Portsmouth, when he visited the Royal Navy’s aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. On this last occasion he showed off the “Scarabeo” brooch (whose official name is “Grima Ruby Scarab Brooc”), in gold, diamonds and rubies that own Filippo had given her in 1966. A tender and discreet homage to the husband who is no longer there.
