Neuralink co-founder Elon Musk said the company hopes to implant its microchips in humans next year. Neuralink has been developing brain-machine neurointerfaces and has been developing brain chips since 2016. One of these chips will be implanted in the human brain to record and stimulate human activity. The company sees the main application of its development in medicine, for example, for the treatment of serious spinal cord injuries and neurological disorders.
During a live interview on The Wall Street Journal, CEO Council Summit Elon Musk was asked about Neuralink’s plans for 2022, to which he replied:
“Neuralink works well with monkeys, we do a lot of testing to prove the safety and reliability of the Neuralink chip, which can be safely removed. We hope that next year, after FDA approval, it will be introduced to the first people – people with severe spinal cord injuries such as tetraplegia. [полный или частичный паралич всех конечностей]».
It is worth noting that Musk talked about an earlier date when Neuralink will begin implanting its chips in human brains. In February, he announced that this could happen at the end of 2021, and in 2019 he promised that human trials would begin by the end of 2020.
In April of this year, Neuralink posted a video of a monkey playing video games using an implanted chip. Neuralink is not the only company developing neurocomputer interface technology. There is also a startup called Synchron, which has already received FDA approval to conduct clinical trials of its neurointerface in humans.
