Elon Musk, a businessman who supports former President Donald Trump, posted on Monday (2) a fake image of what would be the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris, dressed in a red “communist uniform”.
“Kamala swears she’s a communist dictator on day one. Can you believe she wears that outfit!?” Musk posted on X, as reported by CNN International in response to the vice president’s post warning about Trump being a “dictator on day one” in office.
According to X’s policy, users “may not share synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context media that could mislead or confuse people or cause harm.”
Additionally, the company may label posts that “contain misleading media to help people understand their authenticity and provide additional context.”
Musk’s post, however, has no such label.
Last month, Trump posted a fake intelligence-generated image depicting Kmala Harris speaking in front of a communist symbol at the Democratic National Convention.
Images generated by artificial intelligence have seen exponential growth on social media in the run-up to the US elections.
The false posts emerge as tech platforms dismantle barriers and moderation rules designed to reduce the spread of dangerous misinformation.
Those changes were most acute at X, formerly known as Twitter, after Musk bought the company, shut down internal teams that worked to stop the spread of election misinformation and restored the banned accounts of prominent conspiracy theorists and extremists.
