THE Elon Musk sued its creator OpenAI ChatGPT and its CEO Sam Altman, accusing him of abandoning the original mission – to develop artificial intelligence for the benefit of humanity – rather than the profit.
The lawsuit filed Thursday in San Francisco pits the billionaire against the startup he co-founded and is now the face of genetic artificial intelligence, in part because of billions of dollars in funding from Microsoft.
Musk, as reported by Reuters, is alleging a breach of contract, saying that Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman originally approached him to build a non-profit open source company, but the startup founded in 2015 is now focused on making money.
It sought an injunction requiring OpenAI to make its research and technology available to the public and prevent it from using its assets, including its most advanced GPT-4 artificial intelligence model, for the financial benefit of Microsoft or anyone person.
Musk, who runs Tesla as well as rocket maker SpaceX and bought Twitter for $44 billion in October 2022, has repeatedly called for artificial intelligence to be regulated.
He stepped down from OpenAI's board in 2018 and is often critical of Microsoft's ties to the startup. It is recalled that Sam Altman was fired from OpenAI's former board of directors, who said he was trying to defend the company's mission to develop artificial intelligence that will benefit humanity. A few days later, he returned to the company with a new initial board of directors. As the company announced at the time “we have reached an agreement in principle for Sam to return as CEO of OpenAI» and there will be changes in the board of directors.
Now, OpenAI plans to appoint several new board members in March, the Washington Post revealed. Microsoft has said it will have a non-voting observer seat on the board.
