xAI will make the Grok chatbot code publicly available this week, company founder Elon Musk said.
This week @xAI will open source Grok
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) March 11, 2024
The billionaire made this statement after filing a lawsuit against OpenAI. He accused the company of abandoning its original values of openness and working for the benefit of all humanity in favor of a commercial model.
Musk has repeatedly spoken out against the use of AI for personal gain by large technology companies.
The step that the entrepreneur took will provide everyone with the opportunity to experiment with the code underlying Grok. This will combine the achievements of xAI with the successes of other corporations with similar policies, such as Meta and Mistral.
Some experts considerthat open-source AI models could be used by attackers to create chemical weapons or develop superintelligence beyond human control. But they acknowledge that this approach can also help accelerate innovation.
In 2023 Musk stated about the desire to create a “third-party arbiter” monitoring AI companies.
In December, the startup released a chatbot called Grok for Premium+ subscribers on X.
In February 2024, Google also released the Gemma AI model, which third-party developers can modify to suit their needs.
