Elon Musk is a man of ideas. In addition to its desire to flood the market with electric vehicles with its Model Y, X, S, 3, etc., the industrialist has embarked on the conquest of space for several years with his company SpaceX and even aims to become , eventually, with Tesla, an electricity supplier. But it is also setting off to storm the field of spirits. Thus, as CNN reports, Tesla launched, Thursday, November 5, its own tequila, simply called “Tesla Tequila”.
The bottle, which takes the form of a lightning bolt, was made available on the automaker’s website for the modest sum of $ 250, or about 210 euros. Tequila is produced by a California spirits company, Nosotros Tequila. But just a few hours after it went live, it was already out of stock. And this, while an order could only contain a maximum of two bottles and shipments were limited to a certain number of US states.
A long-standing project
Elon Musk, through Tesla, had been thinking about investing in the spirits market for several years. In 2018, he had notably posted a tweet in which we could see a kind of prototype tequila bottle on which appeared a logo and a name: “Teslaquila”. According to CNN, the company even filed a patent for this name at the time.
Elon Musk is not the only celebrity to have started selling and producing alcohol. In 2013, George Clooney also created his own “ultra-premium” tequila, by founding the Casamigos brand. He sold the company in 2017 for a billion dollars. In 2016, footballer David Beckham also surprised by launching, with Diageo, in the development of a whiskey for the Scottish distillery Haig, available in France since the end of 2018.
