ELSTAT: 204.9% jump in turnover for companies in the accommodation sector

The turnover for all companies in the Accommodation sector increased by 204.9% in the first quarter of 2022, and amounted to 283,075,798 euros, from 92,855,293 euros.

In particular, and according to ELSTAT data, for the companies of the Regional Units with a contribution to the total turnover of 2021 greater than 1.0%, the largest increase in turnover in the first quarter 2022 compared to the first quarter 2021 was observed in Peripheral Unit of Rhodes (560.1%) and the smallest increase (66.7%) was recorded in the Peripheral Unit of Kos.

In all companies in the Catering Services sector, the turnover in the first quarter of 2022 amounted to 1,117,240,187 euros, recording an increase of 120.9% compared to the first quarter of 2021, where it had amounted to 505,773,774 euros.

For the companies of the Regional Units with a contribution to the total turnover of 2021 greater than 1.0%, the largest increase in turnover in the first quarter 2022 compared to the first quarter 2021 was observed in the Regional Unit of Thira (350.2%) and the smallest increase (86.1%) was recorded in the Regional Unit of Heraklion (Table 3).

For companies in the Accommodation sector, with the obligation to keep bibliographic books, for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in March 2022 amounted to 91,897,549 euros, recording an increase of 240.7% compared to March 2021, where it had risen to 26,969,308 euros.

For companies in the Catering Services sector, with the obligation to keep bibliographic books, for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in March 2022 amounted to 123,882,427 euros, recording an increase of 115.2% compared to March 2021 , where it had amounted to 57,555,388 euros.

For companies in the Accommodation and Catering services, with the obligation to keep bibliographic books, for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in March 2022 amounted to 215,779,976 euros, an increase of 155.3% compared to in March 2021, where it had risen to 84,524,696 euros.

For the companies of the Regional Units with a contribution to the total turnover of 2021 greater than 1.0%, the largest increase in the turnover in March 2022 compared to March 2021 was observed in the Regional Unit of Zakynthos (435.8%) and the smallest increase (120.9%) was recorded in the Regional Unit of Heraklion.

The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) with this sectoral publication, presents the mapping of the evolution of the turnover of companies operating in the sectors of Accommodation and Catering Services.

These sectors are always in the center of interest due to the importance they have in shaping the performance of the Greek economy as a whole, but also their extensive dispersion, with a significant presence in all regional units and significant contribution to the respective local economies of Greece often associated with the tourist product of Chora.

At the same time, during the recent situation, the monitoring and discreet publication of the evolution of the sizes of these sectors becomes imperative, given the effects, direct and indirect, that they suffered due to the pandemic of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

This publication is part of the series of Press Releases published by ELSTAT (link DT) from April 2020, with the inclusion of the latest data on turnover from Administrative Sources, March and Q1 2022.

A corresponding publication has been planned and carried out by ELSTAT on a monthly basis, throughout the period when it is of interest to more regularly monitor the development of the turnover of companies in the accommodation and catering sectors.

In particular, the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announces data on a monthly basis and in an analysis of the Regional Unit of Greece, for the turnover of companies classified in the Accommodation and Catering Services for the period 2019-2022.

The published data can show, in a detailed local level, the current performance development, in terms of turnover, of the companies operating in key sectors of the tourism sector and in this way provide immediately useful information about the development. of the tourist product of Greece.

It is noted that, from the Press Release published in April 2022 (reference period February 2022), an updated framework for identifying companies classified in the Accommodation and Catering services sector is used, which results from linking at the level of micro-data administrative transaction files, years 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 and the final Statistical Business Register, reference year 2019, which provides a standard set of data, harmonized with European classification standards.
