ELSTAT: 9.7% increase in industrial production in September 2021

The General Industrial Production Index of September 2021 increased by 9.7%, compared to the corresponding index of September 2020, compared to a decrease of 2.1% recorded during the corresponding comparison of the year 2020 with 2019, according to the data announced ELSTAT.

The average General Index of Industrial Production for the period January – September 2021, compared to the corresponding index for the period January – September 2020, showed an increase of 9.5%.

The seasonally adjusted General Index of Industrial Production for the month of September 2021, compared to the corresponding index of August 2021, showed an increase of 1.3%.

The index of the mining sector recorded the largest percentage increase, while the index of the motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers sector recorded the largest percentage decrease in September 2021 compared to August 2021. When comparing the indicators of September 2021 In September 2020, the largest percentage increase was recorded in the sector of other manufacturing activities, while the largest percentage decrease was recorded in the sectors of coal and lignite mining, crude oil and natural gas extraction, and supportive mining activities.

I. Comparison of September 2021 with September 2020

The increase of the General Industrial Index adjusted for the number of working days by 9.7% in September 2021, compared to the corresponding index of September 2020, came from the following changes in the indices of the sub-industrial sectors:

1. From the increase:

• By 11.5% of the Manufacturing Index. The increase was mainly due to the changes in the indicators of the double-digit sectors: other manufacturing activities, coke production and oil refining products, construction of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers, construction of computers, electrical and optical equipment, industrial and optical equipment, industrial and leather goods, construction of machinery and equipment, distillery.

• By 5.8% of the Electricity Supply Index.
• By 2.1% of the Mining – Quarrying Index. This increase is due to the increase in the double-digit index of other mines and quarries.

2. From the reduction:

• By 0.03% of the Water Supply Index.

II. Comparison of the average index for the period January – September 2021 with the corresponding one for the period January – September 2020.

The increase of the adjusted for the number of working days average General Index of Industrial Production of the period January – September 2021 by 9.5%, compared to the corresponding index of the period January – September 2020, came from the following changes of the sub-indices Industry Sectors: From the increase:

• By 16.2% of the Electricity Supply Index.
• By 8.3% of the Manufacturing Index.
• By 5.0% of the Mining – Quarrying Index.
• By 1.0% of the Water Supply Index.

III. Comparison of September 2021 with August 2021

The increase of the seasonally adjusted General Index of Industrial Production by 1.3% in September 2021, compared to the corresponding index of August 2021, came from the following changes in the indices of the individual industry sectors:

1. From the increase:

• By 3.9% of the Manufacturing Index.
• By 0.9% of the Mining – Quarrying Index.

2. From the reduction:

• By 1.4% of the Water Supply Index.
• By 2.6% of the Electricity Supply Index.
