ELSTAT: Deaths increased by 10.72% in the 47 weeks of 2021

The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announces with an extraordinary press release provisional statistical data that record the weekly evolution of deaths from the first (1st) to the forty-seventh (47th) week of the year 2021.

According to these data, the deaths in Greece during the first 47 weeks of 2021 (4/1/2021 – 28/11/2021) amounted to 127,146 (64,814 men and 62,332 women) while during the corresponding 47 weeks of 2020 (30 / 12/2019 – 22/11/2020) had reached 114,839 (57,811 men and 57,028 women), recording an increase of 10.72%.

An increase of 16,944 deaths (15.38%) was recorded compared to the average of the first 47 weeks of the six years 2015 – 2020 (110,202 deaths).

The corresponding percentages, per year, for the period 2015 – 2020 amount to 2.29% in 2020 compared to 2019 (112,264), 4.41% in 2019 compared to 2018 (107,519), -4.12% in 2018 compared to 2017 (112,137), 6.57% in 2017 compared to 2016 (105,223) and -3.67% in 2016 compared to 2015 (109,229).

ELSTAT notes that the data refer to the deaths that took place in Greece, during this period, which were caused by various causes including deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The data included in this publication are compiled in the context of the Physical Movement of the Population (FKP) investigation and come from data transmitted by the Registries of all Municipal Authorities according to the facts of death that have been declared and registered up to the date of transmission.

Late death declarations transmitted to ELSTAT are incorporated, after their submission, on the date of the event.
