The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) announces the results of the survey on maritime accidents of Greek merchant ships, 100 GRT (Total Capacity Taxes) and above and the survey on persons injured in ships and at sea areas of responsibility of the port authorities of the year 2021.
More specifically, for maritime accidents of Greek merchant ships, 100 GRT and above:
A total of 5 maritime accidents were recorded on Greek merchant ships 100 GRT and above, with a total capacity of 65,515 GRT.
The ships on which an accident occurred account for 0.27% of the total strength of the Greek merchant fleet and 0.17% of its total capacity.
Of the 5 ships on which an accident occurred, one (20.0%) was cargo and four (80.0%) were passenger.
In 4 ships nautical accidents were caused due to engine failure, and in 1 due to collision.
Regarding the persons who had an accident:
The number of people who had an accident on ships or at sea under the responsibility of port authorities amounted to 175. The total number of people who had an accident increased in 2021 compared to 2020 by 18.2%.
A decrease (44.8%) was observed in the year 2020 compared to the year 2019. Of the 175 people who had an accident, in the year 2021, 117 (66.9%) were involved in a fatal accident and ended up.
