New business registrations (business start-ups) were down for all sectors of the economy in the second quarter, according to the data announced by the Hellenic Statistical Authority.
In particular, for the specific period new business registrations amounted to 25,341, showing a decrease of 3.9% compared to the second quarter of 2021 which had risen to 26,370 and a decrease of 7.2% compared to the first quarter of 2022 which had risen in 27,301.
For the sectors of economic activity with the largest contribution to the total turnover, according to the data of the Statistical Register of Businesses of the reference year 2019, the largest increase in the number of new business registrations, in the second quarter of 2022 compared to the second quarter of 2021, recorded in the “Transportation and Storage” sector (36.3%) and in the “Financial and Insurance Activities” sector (22.5%), while the corresponding largest decrease was recorded in the “Electricity, Natural Gas, Steam and Air Conditioning” sector (15.2%) and in the “Wholesale and Retail Trade, Repair of Motor Vehicles and Motorcycles” sector (13.7%).
For Q2 2022, data on business bankruptcies is not published for reasons of statistical confidentiality regarding the protection of the identity of businesses. Business bankruptcies for all sectors of the economy in the 2nd quarter of 2021 amounted to 4.

The sectors of economic activity, in which the largest number of new business registrations were recorded, per Large Geographical Region of Greece, are:
• Northern Greece: “Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries”(1) , with 1,081 entries out of a total of 6,311.
• Central Greece: “Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries” (1) , with 1,220 entries out of a total of 5,691.
• Attica: “Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities”, with 1,930 entries out of a total of 9,933.
• Aegean Islands – Crete: “Accommodation and Catering Services Activities”, with 663 entries out of a total of 3,406.

The sectors of economic activity, in which the largest number of new business registrations were recorded, by category of Legal Form of business, are:
• Sole Proprietorships: “Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries” (1) , with 3,093 entries out of a total of 16,889.
• Personal Businesses: “Accommodation and Catering Services Activities”, with 648 entries out of a total of 2,804.
• Capital Enterprises: “Real Estate Management”, with 125 entries out of a total of 463.
• Other Legal Forms: “Real Estate Management”, with 1,002 entries out of a total of 5,185.
