ELSTAT: Turnover in retail trade increased by 16.4% in May

The Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) presents in detail the evolution of sales/turnover of all classes of activity in the retail trade sector.

Retail is the core business model of the modern consumer supply chain, through the resale of tangible goods or services and the promotion of products for profit.

1. Businesses in the retail trade sector with an obligation to keep duplicate books

For enterprises in the retail trade sector with an obligation to keep double-entry books, for which data are available on a monthly basis, turnover in May 2022 amounted to €3.11 billion, an increase of 16.4% compared to May 2021 which had been formed at 2.67 billion euros and an increase of 2.1% compared to April 2022 which had been formed at 3.0 billion euros.

The activities that showed the largest increase in turnover in May 2022 compared to May 2021 are:

• Retail trade of cosmetics and beauty products in specialized stores, an increase of 58.1%.

• Retail trade of carpets, kilims and floor and wall coverings in specialized stores, an increase of 49.1%.

The activities that showed the largest decrease in turnover in May 2022 compared to May 2021 are:

• Sale of other motor vehicles, down 14.2%
• Retail trade of electrical household appliances in specialized stores, decrease of 3.3%

The Regions that showed the greatest increase in turnover in May 2022 compared to May 2021 are:

• South Aegean Region, 65.5% increase.
• Region of the Ionian Islands, an increase of 32.2%.

2. Businesses in the retail trade sector, with the exception of vehicles, food and fuel1, with an obligation to keep duplicate books

For businesses in the retail trade sector, with the exception of vehicles, food and fuel, with the obligation to keep double-entry books, for which data are available on a monthly basis, the turnover in May 2022 amounted to 0.83 billion euros, marking an increase of 14.5% compared to May 2021 which had been formed at 0.73 billion euros and an increase of 1.9% compared to April 2022 which had been formed at 0.82 billion euros.

The Regions that showed the greatest increase in turnover in May 2022 compared to May 2021 are:

• South Aegean region, an increase of 83.5%.
• Region of Attica, an increase of 14.7%.

The Regions that showed a decrease in turnover in May 2022 compared to May 2021 are:

• Region of Epirus, decrease of 14.0%.
• North Aegean region, a decrease of 4.4%.
