Having avoided the worst of the cyber attack that took place in their information system in the early hours of Monday, the executives of the Hellenic Post in collaboration with special associates are working on the restoration of the computer systems, but also on the assessment of the damage caused.
According to what has become known so far, ELTA was the target of a cyber attack aimed at encrypting the critical systems for the business operation of the company. This method refers to one of the fastest growing forms of cyber-attacks in the world in the form of “ransomware”, in which cybercriminals access the data of an organization or a company, encrypt it and then demand ransom (usually in the form of cryptocurrencies) to return control.
A computer with malware installed was the backdoor for cybercriminals trying to gain access to the ELTA information system, but no ransom was reported. closed immediately, isolating the company’s data center, which resulted in all information systems being shut down, from e-mail to commercial applications.
The goal is quick recovery
Now, the main goal of the executives of ELTA and the special collaborators on IT security issues is the most immediate and safe restoration of the full operation of the network, as the stores are now open for a third day only for the distribution of mail and parcels. This is a very complex project because all the terminals (more than 2,500) and all the subsystems that the company operates must be examined and upgraded.
The actions that are not performed are the payments of DEKO bills through ELTA branches and the receipt of letters to be sent to the local post offices. All these functions, however, except for the financial services, are normally served by the subsidiary ELTA Courier, as its systems were not affected by the cyber attack incident in the group.
ELTA has committed that all pensions will be paid to the beneficiaries on time, while for the benefits will also be made every effort to be paid on time. They also note that the accounts and correspondence of DEKO are not affected and are served normally.
According to information, the Greek police authorities are participating in the investigation of the incident, while the Communications Confidentiality Assurance Authority (ADAE) and the National Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) are receiving full information as a supervisory Authority.
