Elton John explains his musical failure: “Very political to the US”

Singer Elton John, 78, can be one of the best -selling musical artists in his decades career, but is not afraid to recognize when a project fails. The legendary singer spoke candy to Sunday Times in an interview published on Friday (4) about his Broadway production “Tammy Faye”, which he described as “failure”.

“We have recently released two musicals, a big failure in America and another a big hit in England,” he said, referring to “Tammy Faye” and the production of the West end of “The Devil Wears Prada”, respectively.

“Tammy Faye”, a musical based on the life of the singer and pastor, debuted on Broadway on November 14. The show could not find its audience and closed a month later.

John suspects that the state of American politics intersection with the moment of the show’s debut had something to do with why the musical never took off.

“‘Tammy Faye’ debuted during the US elections and it’s all about how the integration between church and state ruined America, what Ronald Reagan did,” he said, referring to the election of November 5, 2024. “It was too political for America. They don’t understand well irony.”

In December, the New York Times reported that the show performed below the expected box office and performances on the Palace Theater had 37% of the empty seats.

John produced the song, Jake Shears from SCISSOR SISTERS wrote the lyrics and Rupert Goold was the director of the musical. Katie Brayben starred as Faye.

The singer of “Saturday Night” has already found great success producing music for Broadway shows, including his work in “The Lion King”, “Billy Elliot” and “Aida”. He recently released a collaborative album with singer and songwriter Brandi Carlile entitled “Who Believes in Angels?”
