Elton John says legalizing marijuana is “one of the biggest mistakes of all time”

Elton John 77, made his intentions clear opinions against the legalization of marijuana .

In an interview with Time magazine, the legendary singer spoke about legalization in parts of the US and Canada: “It’s addictive. Leads to other drugs. And when you’re high, and I’ve been high, you don’t think normally.”

“The legalization of marijuana in America and Canada is one of the biggest mistakes of all time,” he added.

Elton John is Eminem’s sobriety godfather and he was the one who organized British singer Robbie Williams’ first admission to rehabilitation, as highlighted by the magazine.

One artist he regrets not being able to help was the late George Michael, who struggled with substance abuse before dying from heart and liver disease in 2016 at the age of 53.

“It’s hard to tell someone you’re being an idiot, and it’s hard to hear it,” John said of his attempts to help Michael with sobriety. “Eventually, I made the choice to admit I was being an idiot.”

John’s long-time songwriting partner Bernie Taupin said that when John was addicted to drugs he was “terrified of him” and that it was “absolutely horrible”.

“A lot of the work we did in times when he was at his worst wasn’t the best of both of us,” Taupin said. “I couldn’t creatively invest time in writing material that related to him until he actually found himself, and then it became easier for me to reflect on it.”
