The wake of singer Elza Soares takes place, this Friday (21), at the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro. She died on Thursday afternoon (20), at age 91, of natural causes.
The artist’s body arrived at the place in the morning, and the farewell ceremony began at around 8 am, reserved for family and friends.
From 10 am, the wake will be open to the public, and must remain so until 2 pm.
Then, a car from the Rio de Janeiro Fire Department will transfer in procession to the Jardim da Saudade Sulacap cemetery, in the west side of the capital.
On site, at 3 pm, the wake will continue in the VIP Chapel, restricted to family and friends. The burial will take place at 16 pm, in the Christ the Redeemer sector.
The mayor of the capital of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Paes, declared official mourning for three days for the death of the singer and songwriter. The decree was published in this Friday’s edition of the Official Gazette of the Municipality of Rio de Janeiro.

Elza would perform on February 3, in São Paulo, and on February 19 and 28, in Rio de Janeiro. The singer still had concerts scheduled for Curitiba and Belo Horizonte and her schedule until the month of August.

Born on June 23, 1930 in the west of Rio de Janeiro, she was married at age 12 to a man ten years her senior, Alaúrdes Soares, and was a mother at 13. Elza lost two of her five children to starvation and became widow at 21.
He met Garrincha in the 1960s, with whom he had a son. They were together for 15 years and, throughout this period, Elza suffered from recurring episodes of domestic violence, reported years later.
Like Elza, Garrincha also died on January 20th. It was in 1983.
The singer was also the samba theme of Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel, in 2020, with the theme “Elza Deusa Soares”.
