Embargo on beef mobilizes China-Brazil relations; ministers react to deforestation

This week, China authorized the resumption of imports of Brazilian meat with an export license issued before September 4, when atypical cases of mad cow appeared in Brazil. The Chinese veto, which remains in effect for certified beef after the embargo began, is identified as the biggest trade crisis in 47 years of relations between the two countries.

In this episode of CNN Mundo, Lourival Sant’Anna analyzes the weight of political and trade issues surrounding the Chinese embargo on Brazilian meat. Another highlight is the reaction of the ministers of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, of the Environment, Joaquim Leite, and of Foreign Affairs, Carlos França, to the announcement of a 22% increase in the logging in Brazil. França and Leite sought to reaffirm the commitments that the Brazilian government assumed in COP26 (26th UN Climate Conference), when the country pledged to eliminate illegal deforestation by 2028.

The new episode of CNN World it also describes the possible consequences of elections held in South America. In Chile, for the first time since the country’s redemocratization in 1990, the traditional center-left and center-right parties will not participate in the final dispute to elect the new president Chilean. In Venezuela, the Chavez regime elected 20 of the 23 governors, but the electoral process ended up being marked by the opposition’s return to the polls.
