Embassy recommends that Brazilians avoid southern Lebanon amid the intensification of the war

The Brazilian embassy in Beirut recommended this Monday (23) that Brazilian citizens living in Lebanon avoid staying in the south of the country — the region that borders the north of Israel — and in the border areas.

The guidance was given amid the escalation of Israel’s war against Hamas and the possible embarkation of the conflict by the Islamic fundamentalist political and paramilitary organization Hezbollah, which dominates southern Lebanon.

The Brazilian government recommends that citizens adopt safety instructions from local authorities, reinforce precautionary measures – especially in the south of the country – and avoid taking part in crowds and protests.

“If you are not in Lebanon, avoid non-essential travel to the country. For nationals who do not consider it essential to stay in Lebanon, the Brazilian Embassy in Beirut recommends that they consider the precaution of leaving the country until its return to normality”, it informs.

The embassy reinforced that it is attentive to “the persistence of incidents on the southern border and is committed to providing the necessary guidance to the community”.

Southern Lebanon, an area monitored with concern by the Brazilian embassy in the country, is dominated by Hezbollah. The group’s cells have been attacked by Israeli forces amid the intensification of the war.

In recent days, rockets have been launched from southern Lebanon towards Israel and from Israel targeting southern Lebanon.

A CNN showed two weeks ago that the Brazilian government was following with concern Hezbollah’s entry into the war between Israel and Hamas.

The assessment was that, if this happened, Lebanon — and not just Hezbollah, which controls the south of the country — could become a target of Israel, increasing tension in the region.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned on Sunday (22) that if Hezbollah decides to enter the war, it will be paralyzed “with a force that [o grupo] you can’t even imagine.”

“And the meaning for [o Hezbollah] and for the State of Lebanon it will be devastating, but we are prepared for any scenario,” Netanyahu said this weekend during a visit to troops in northern Israel.

Also on Sunday, Israel Defense Forces spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said Hezbollah is “playing a very dangerous game” and could drag Lebanon “into a war from which it will gain nothing.”

“Is the Lebanese State really willing to put what remains of Lebanese prosperity and Lebanese sovereignty at risk because of the terrorists in Gaza?” wrote Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus on his social media.
