In this Friday (17) edition of the Medical Correspondent chart, on the New Day, cardiologist Stephanie Rizk talked about Thromboembolism, a disease that affected country singer Maurílio Ribeiro, from the duo Luiza and Maurílio.
Singer Maurílio is still hospitalized in serious condition in the ICU of Hospital Jardim América, in Goiânia. According to the singer’s press office, he “follows the care of a multidisciplinary team with several specialists.” Maurílio suffered a sequence of cardiac arrests and went to the hospital at dawn on Wednesday (15).
According to Dr. Rizk, thromboembolism begins with a clot in the leg region, which moves to the lung region. “This thrombus displaces and enters the heart. From the heart, it goes to the pulmonary vessels and impacts the artery, causing obstruction.”
According to the doctor, depending on where the obstruction occurs, the patient may have more severe or less severe cases of the disease.
“Depending on where this thrombus impacts, you can have bigger or smaller problems. If it’s in the middle of the artery, you damage almost the entire lung. Then it can generate more serious cases, heart failure and cardiac arrest”, he explained.
“Sometimes there are subsegmental thrombi, which are small. Sometimes we don’t even make the diagnosis, which is just a cough and a small pain in the chest region.”
Some factors can be considered risk factors for the development of thromboembolism. Among the main ones are: prolonged immobility (long standing still), obesity, cancer and tobacco consumption.
Pain in the leg region, shortness of breath, chest and chest pain and coughing are some of the main symptoms to keep an eye on. Younger patients, such as the case of singer Maurilio, may be more susceptible to this type of disease if they have thrombophilia, that is, a genetic predisposition to develop this type of problem.
