Brazilian aeronautical giant Embraer announced this Tuesday (19) a joint venture with the British company BAE Systems for the formation of a new business aimed at the development of variants of the “flying car” (eVTOL, in the acronym in English) specialized in the defense sector, an area in which Embraer also has a tradition.
The announcement was made during the Farnborough Airshow, an event for the aeronautical sector in England. With the use of eVTOL in the defense area, the companies estimate an additional order of 150 units, in addition to the 1,910 orders that Embraer has already collected for the model, which should only start operating in 2026.
“Our eVTOL can be adapted to meet many critical applications in this market, such as humanitarian response and disaster relief. This collaboration also indicates that the defense market can be more sustainable and, at the same time, allows Eve to remain focused on exploring the Urban Air Mobility market,” said the co-president of Eve (the Embraer company that develops the flying cars) , André Stein.

“The BAE Systems and Embraer teams will continue to work together to explore how the aircraft, designed for the urban mobility market, can provide cost-effective capability, be sustainable and adaptable as a defense variant,” said Embraer Defense President and CEO. and Security, Jackson Schneider.
In December 2021, Embraer and BAE Systems had disclosed plans to collaborate on the development of Eve’s eVTOL as a potential defense variant. “This agreement reinforces the confidence of leading aerospace organizations in the Eve vehicle and its adaptability for purposes other than urban air mobility,” the company said in a statement.
BAE Systems Air COO Ian Muldowney said customers’ operating environment is increasingly complex. “eVTOL is just one example of how we are looking at emerging technologies, including those in the commercial market. We are exploring how we can adapt these solutions to bring vital operational capability to our customers quickly and at a lower cost, while supporting environmental and sustainability goals,” he commented.
