THE Russia has been heavily criticized for the barrage of missile and drone strikes it launched over the past 24 hours on Ukraineduring the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Friday
At least 31 people were killed and more than 160 were injured during the worst wave of attacks launched by Russian forces since the start of the war in February 2022, according to Ukrainian authorities. Poland said a Russian missile violated its airspace before heading to its target in Ukraine.
“Tragically, 2023 ends as it began: with devastating violence against the people of Ukraine”UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Hiary said while briefing the Security Council on the recent attacks launched by Russia in Ukraine. “Once again, Ukrainians are forced to spend the holidays seeking shelter, clearing rubble and burying the dead in the freezing cold.”he added.
Most members of his Security Council UN – including the US, France and Britain – condemned the Russian attacks in Ukraine.
US envoy John Kelly underlined that Vladimir Putin chose, “instead of peace”, to unleash “barrage of missile and drone attacks against another UN member state” in the middle of the festive season and just before the arrival of the new year.
China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Zheng Shuang refrained from condemning the Russian attackscalling for a “political solution” to end the war in Ukraine.
In his lengthy posting, the Russian ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia claimed, among other things, that Russia launched attacks exclusively against Ukrainian military infrastructureblaming Ukrainian air defenses for civilian deaths.
Britain's ambassador to the UN, Barbara Woodward, emphasized that Russia is entirely responsible for the tragedy in Ukraine. “The rest is a flood of lies and misinformation”Woodward replied to her Russian counterpart.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemns Russia's attacks on Ukraine, his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement. “Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure violate international humanitarian law, are unacceptable and must stop immediately,” he stressed.
