The superstars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña stated that starring in the film “Emilia Pérez” allowed them to rediscover their emotions and talents.
Directed by Frenchman Jacques Audiard, the production combines musical, crime and comedy genres to tell the story of the leader of a Mexican cartel, played by Karla Sofía Gascón, who transitions from male to female and creates a non-profit institution to find the bodies of missing people.
Gascón, the transgender actress, plays the male and female identities of Emilia Pérez. Saldaña plays the lawyer who helps her transition, while Selena plays the mother of Emilia’s children.
Texas-born Selena described the project as “a gift of patience and audacity.”
“I must be happy in my life. I must be in love. I should feel frustrated when it’s my time to be frustrated. It (film) allowed me to feel”, she said this Friday, at the premiere of the production at the London Film Festival.
“Emilia Pérez” is presented with melodic Spanish and features both singing and dancing. “The film gave me the opportunity to reconnect with a part of myself that I had left behind a long time ago,” said Saldaña.
“When I got into acting, I kind of shed that dancing skin, although I was able to utilize the skills to kind of jumpstart a career in genre-oriented action films. But I miss it. I will always be a dancer at heart,” said the “Avatar” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” star.
The film premiered at Cannes in May, where it was highly praised and won the jury prize. Saldaña, Gascón, Selena and Adriana Paz shared the award for best actress. Immediately, Oscar rumors began to surface.
“Emilia Pérez” premieres on the Netflix streaming platform on November 13th.
