Emma Roberts on criticism of “nepo babies”: “They don’t see all the rejection”

The American actress Emma Roberts 33, spoke about the comments regarding “nepo babies” in Hollywood during her appearance on the podcast Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi from the iHeartMedia. She, who is the daughter of Eric Roberts (“King of the Gypsies”) and niece of Julia Roberts (“Pretty Woman”), said that coming from a family of celebrities does not guarantee success in the industry.

“People only see your victories because they only see you when you’re on a movie poster. They don’t see all the rejection along the way. That’s why I’m always very open about the things I auditioned for and didn’t get the part for. I think it’s important to talk about it – otherwise people just think everything has been so nice and linear and easy, and it’s not like that at all,” she said.

“I think there’s something to be said for the fact that everyone loves the overnight success story. And so, if you’re not the girl from the middle of nowhere who broke into Hollywood, there’s kind of an eye roll, like, ‘Well, that’s what your dad was,” she added.

The actress highlighted that “there are two sides to the coin” in coming from a family already well-established in Hollywood.

“People like to say you have an advantage because you have family in the industry. But the flip side of that is that you need to prove yourself more. Plus, if people don’t have good experiences with other people in your family, you’ll never have a chance,” he continued.

Roberts began his career in the early 2000s and starred in films such as “Aquamarine” (2006) and “Spoiled girl” (2008). His latest film work includes titles such as “Love With a Set Date” (2020) and “Family Wedding” (2023). On TV, she stood out in the series “American Horror Story” (2011) and “Scream Queens” (2015-2016).

What does it mean to be a “nepo baby”?

The term “nepo baby” exploded in 2022 and is an abbreviation of the expression “nepotism baby” (“nepotism baby”, in Portuguese translation). By definition, nepotism, as defined by the Houaiss dictionary, is the favoritism of relatives, especially by public authorities. Following this line, the term “nepo baby” refers to a new generation of celebrities who have achieved a place in the industry more easily because they already have very active parents within it.
