French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday (10) called on France’s main political forces to form a coalition with a “solid” majority after Sunday’s (7) elections resulted in a fragmented parliament.
Macron made the remarks in a letter published in several regional newspapers. He said he would appoint a prime minister at the end of this process.
In calling for a coalition, Macron used the term “republican bloc”, which implies the traditional parties and not the far right and the far left.
The unexpected result of early elections, in which the left-wing New Popular Front (NFP), which includes the far left, won a surprise surge but no group won an outright majority. The election has plunged France into uncertainty, with no obvious path to forming a stable government.
