Emmanuel Macron dreams of being a “facilitator” of dialogue between Iran and the United States

Emmanuel Macron will do “everything possible to support any American initiative” to re-engage in dialogue with Tehran on the nuclear issue, moribund since the United States left the 2015 international agreement in 2018, he said Thursday 4 February 2021. “I will do my best to support any American initiative to re-engage in a demanding dialogue, and I will try to be (…) a facilitator in this dialogue”, declared the French president during a speech in front of the Atlantic Council think tank.

“I believe that we need to finalize a new negotiation with Iran, and President Biden has a critical role,” he said, hoping that Joe Biden, who recently took office, will resume negotiations to find a solution. solution negotiated with Tehran, after the policy of “maximum pressure” followed by his predecessor Donald Trump who had denounced the nuclear agreement (JCPOA) of 2015, aimed at preventing, at least for a time, Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons.

It is the right time

Since this American exit, and despite the efforts of the Europeans to keep the JCPOA afloat, Iran has repeatedly violated its obligations, gradually resuming its nuclear activities. Emmanuel Macron has tried on several occasions to resume the dialogue between the United States led by Donald Trump and Iran, as during a G7 summit in Biarritz in August 2019 or on the sidelines of the general assembly of the UN the same year, but without success.

For Emmanuel Macron, a new negotiation is now necessary, because Tehran “is much closer to having a nuclear bomb than before the signing of the JCPOA” and also in particular “because we must also settle the subject of ballistic missiles”, in reference to Iran’s capabilities to threaten its neighbors with missiles.

“This is the right time” to negotiate as there will be presidential elections in Iran in June which could be a game-changer in the event of a victory for a candidate supporting a harder line on this issue. President Macron also pleaded “to find a way to involve Saudi Arabia and Israel in these (new) discussions”, “key partners in the region and directly concerned”.
