Emmys 2022: Ted Lasso, Succession and The White Lotus are the big winners

The drama about a media dynasty in “Succession” and the comedy involving a small Premier League team in “Ted Lasso” took top Emmy trophies on Monday (12).

Other highlights of the night were the series “The White Lotus”, which racked up more awards throughout the night, and an actor from “Round 6”, who won a grand prize for acting honoring the great moment of South Korean culture.

“Succession” was named “Best Drama Series,” an award the HBO show won in 2020, before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted its production schedule. The show, which won four trophies in total, tells the story of the rich and treacherous Roy family and how its members vie for power.

Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso” also won again, taking the “best comedy series” award for the second year in a row for its story of a football coach leading a British football team.

Its stars Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein were second-time winners for “Best Actor in a Comedy” and “Best Supporting Actor”.

Likewise, the award consecrated the star of “Euphoria”, Zendaya, as “Best Actress in a Drama” and Jean Smart, of “Hacks”, as “Best Actress in a Comedy”. It was the second win for each of these actresses in those categories.

A newcomer was Lee Jung-jae, who was named “Best Drama Actor” for his role in the South Korean thriller “Round 6”. The dystopian story about cash-strapped competitors risking their lives for wealth became a global sensation after its release on Netflix a year ago.

The actor thanked the team behind “Round 6” for “making the realistic problems we all have to face come to life so creatively on screen.”

The most awarded show of the night was “The White Lotus”, from HBO. The show won 10 awards, including “best limited series” and acting trophies for Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Bartlett. These wins helped HBO and the streaming service HBO Max lead compared to all other streaming platforms with 38 awards in total.

Awards host and “Saturday Night Live” star Kenan Thompson kept a celebratory tone throughout the show, saying it was time to enjoy one of the world’s favorite pastimes.

“What would we do without television, read books?”, he joked, before joining dance numbers to themes from series openings, ranging from the classic “Friends” to the current science fiction hit “Stranger Things”.

The victors largely avoided politics or world events. One exception was “Succession” creator Jesse Armstrong, who joked that it was a big week for “successions,” referring to King Charles III taking the British throne after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

“I’m not saying we’re any more legitimate in our position than he is. We’ll leave that to other people,” Armstrong said.

British “Ted Lasso” actor Goldstein, who plays foul-mouthed but soft-hearted football legend Roy Kent, said he would try not to swear after his profanity comments were cut short in the UK when he won last year, preventing your family from hearing them.

Then he added, “Mom, Dad… I fucking love you.”

Singer Lizzo won an Emmy Award for the competition series for “Watch Out for the Big Grrrls”. The singer said that since she was a little girl, she always wanted television to present “someone as fat as me, as black as me, as beautiful as me.”

“I’m going to go back and tell Lizzo something…you’re going to be that person,” she said.

Among other winners, Michael Keaton was named a leading actor in a limited series for playing a small-town doctor who becomes addicted to painkillers in “Dopesick.”
