The Civil Police indicted two employees of a pet shop for the crime of qualified abuse due to the death of a Shih Tzu dog focused during the bath and grooming. The case occurred in the Estreito neighborhood of Florianópolis, capital of Santa Catarina.
The dog was left alone on a tall bench, tied with a rope by the neck. The animal stirred and fell, as the rope was stuck, Shih Tzu died hanged.
One of the pet shop staff left the dog tied under the bench and the other left and left the dog alone. The Civil Police concluded that both were responsible for the welfare of the animal during care.
The dog was on the bench tied almost 3h, without access to water and without suitable place for his physiological needs. The investigation found that the standard pet shop protocol states that after bath and grooming the dog should be placed in the kennel.
In the case of Shih Tzu, the employees claimed that the dog was very anxious and was injured in the kennel, and urinating and defecating on the scene, dirty again. The inquiry concluded that the behavior of the animal does not justify the decision not to follow the protocols that guarantee the welfare of the dog.
The Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine (CRMV) was notified in relation to the commercial establishment and supervision of the procedures adopted.
