Employees of Russian defense enterprises banned from using WhatsApp, Zoom and Skype

RBC, citing its own source in the Russian military-industrial complex, reported that employees of the state corporation Rostec and all of its subsidiaries were instructed to transfer all corporate and work chats from the WhatsApp application to another messenger. This is due to the fact that the authors of the popular messenger changed the privacy policy – the application transmits various personal information of users to Facebook, which owns WhatsApp. Accordingly, there can be no question of any confidential correspondence or transfer of information through this platform.

Moreover, another source in the field of the Russian defense industry told RBC that in fact, the use of foreign applications to perform work tasks for the defense industry employees was prohibited before, it was just that the employees of the complex themselves usually neglected this rule. Neither WhatsApp, Zoom, nor Skype can be installed on work computers of the defense industry, and employees, wanting to speed up the communication process, found an opportunity to use the software for work purposes. Now that most conferences and events have moved to online format, the problem of security and possible information leakage has become especially acute, so they decided to tighten the precautions.

On the other hand, insiders said that this ban applies exclusively to business purposes – WhatsApp, Zoom and Skype and any other foreign applications for defense industry employees cannot be used for corporate correspondence, transfer of information and various secret data. But for personal use, no one forbids having the same WhatsApp on a personal smartphone, like other popular foreign programs and services.
